City public transport — apps & prices
- Each region has one app for all buses/trams/metro/local ferries: Ruter (Oslo), Skyss (Bergen), AtB (Trondheim), Kolumbus (Stavanger). Nationwide planner: Entur.
- Buy the ticket in the app before boarding — inspectors fine ~NOK 1 000–1 500 on the spot, "I just boarded" doesn't help.
- Oslo examples (zone 1): single ~NOK 44, 30-day pass ~NOK 950. Kids, students (−40%) and seniors pay less. Other cities are similar or cheaper.
- Night buses on weekends often cost extra; single tickets usually allow transfers within ~60–110 min.
Trains, long-distance buses & flights
- Trains: Vy (most lines), SJ Nord, Go-Ahead (south-west). Book early for minipris from ~NOK 249–349 on long routes (Oslo–Bergen is one of Europe's most scenic rides).
- Airport, Oslo: Flytoget express ~NOK 240, but the ordinary Vy train is ~half price, same track, few minutes slower — locals take Vy.
- Long-distance buses: Vy buss, Flixbus — cheap Oslo↔Bergen/Trondheim/Gothenburg.
- Domestic flights (Norwegian, SAS, Widerøe) are often cheaper than the train if booked early — Norway is long; Oslo–Tromsø is a 2h flight vs a 24h drive.
Taxis, e-scooters & city bikes
- Taxis are expensive: start ~NOK 100–150 + ~15–25/km; airport trips can hit NOK 800–1 500. Use apps (Oslo Taxi, Bolt, Uber in Oslo) and check the price estimate first.
- E-scooters (Voi, Tier, Ryde): ~NOK 10 unlock + ~3–5/min; parking rules are enforced; 0.02% alcohol limit applies to riding them too — people get DUI fines on scooters after parties.
- City bikes (Oslo Bysykkel etc.): season pass a few hundred kroner — the cheapest transport in summer.
Ferries & the coast
- Car ferries are part of roads on the west coast — drive on, pay automatically (AutoPASS ferry agreement gives up to 50% off).
- Havila/Hurtigruten coastal ships (Bergen→Kirkenes) work as local transport along the coast, not just cruises.
