Norway salary calculator 2026
Enter your gross monthly salary and see what actually reaches your account — net pay, total tax, and the effective rate you really pay. The calculation uses the official 2026 figures published by Skatteetaten, listed in full below so you can check every step.

How the calculation works
Norwegian income tax is not one rate. Three separate charges are added together, and the calculator applies all three:
- National insurance (trygdeavgift) — 7.6% of your gross salary, with no deductions applied first. Skatteetaten ↗
- Tax on general income (alminnelig inntekt) — 22% — but only after the minimum standard deduction (46% of salary, capped at 95 700 kr) and the personal allowance (114 540 kr) are subtracted. Skatteetaten ↗
- Bracket tax (trinnskatt) — A rising rate charged on gross personal income above 226 100 kr, in five steps. Only the income inside each step is charged at that step's rate. Skatteetaten ↗

The PAYE scheme, if you are new here
Most people arriving for their first job are placed in the PAYE scheme (kildeskatt på lønn): a flat 25% of gross pay, with no deductions and no tax return to file. You cannot earn more than 725 050 kr in 2026 and stay in it, and you can opt out to be taxed under the ordinary rules if that works out cheaper. Tick the box above to compare the two.
Common questions
How much tax do you actually pay in Norway?
Less than the headline rates suggest. Someone earning 600,000 kr a year pays roughly 24% of gross once the personal allowance and minimum standard deduction are taken into account. The rate rises with income because each bracket-tax step only applies to the income above its threshold.
What is trinnskatt (bracket tax)?
A separate tax on your gross personal income, on top of the 22% on general income. Nothing is charged on the first 226 100 kr. Above that it rises through five steps, and only the part of your income inside a step is taxed at that step's rate — moving into a higher step never reduces your take-home pay.
Why is the tax on my payslip different from this?
Your employer deducts according to your tax deduction card (skattekort), which is a percentage or a table number based on what you told Skatteetaten you expect to earn. It is an estimate collected monthly; the difference is settled in your tax return. Two months are also treated specially — holiday pay is normally paid without deduction, and December is usually taxed at half rate.
Does this include church tax, union fees or pension?
No. This is income tax only. Occupational pension contributions (typically 2% or more), union fees and any voluntary deductions come off separately, so your actual bank transfer will be lower than the net figure shown.
An estimate for planning, not a tax assessment. Skatteetaten's own calculator is the authority, and your final tax depends on deductions specific to you — commuting, interest, childcare and more.
